British Government’s Rwanda plan fails miserably

The Supreme Court handed down its judgement today ruling that the British Government’s plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda is unlawful.

The highest court in this country found that there were substantial grounds to believe that genuine refugees sent to the country could be at risk of being returned to countries from which they have fled.

Lord Reed pointed out that that Rwanda has a 100% rate of rejection of asylum claims from countries in known conflict zones – such as Syria, Yemen and Afghanistan. Rwanda also has a poor human rights record and the evidence before the Supreme Court raised questions as to whether it would comply with international obligations.

This is an important decision from the Supreme Court in the struggle to protect the rights of refugees in the UK.

At Elaahi & Co Solicitors, we don’t believe any asylum seeker should be sent to an unsafe third country and we believe it’s the UK’s responsibility to deal with asylum claims in a fair and transparent manner.
